Reflections on the Future
Past President's Review

Paul Clark, Jr., 2007 BCMC President

How can you reflect (look back) on the future? I think what I am trying to say in relation to this year’s conference is that I hope and pray that as you and I consider those things that took place leading up to and during the sessions in Orlando that we will consider the vision for the future. I am certainly not only speaking of the future of the Baptist Church Music Conference as an organization, but rather of the future of Church Music, of the ongoing song of praise, of the ministry through music in, to, and through a “future generation; that a people not yet created may praise the Lord” (from Psalm 102:18). I am more convinced than ever that the song is passed on most effectively from the lives of people to the lives of people through the power and work of the Holy Spirit.

One of the students who presented music at this year’s conference confessed to me that they came with a private hope of impressing people with their talent, but were leaving deeply moved by all they had experienced in the services and in getting to know such a caring group of people. Another seminarian said that they would be going back to their studies with a new enthusiasm toward excellence and ministry. Those two conversations were priceless to me.

I want to express my appreciation again for all who have been so diligent to serve this year in preparation and execution of the conference gathering, as well as in relation to the care and nurture of the BCMC as an organization. In planning for our gatherings of the Executive Council, I found myself excited about being with them because of their wonderful spirits and the resultant warm atmosphere. We just flat out had a good time together. Members of the council displayed an attitude of full cooperation and helpfulness throughout. Our sponsors and special assistants always went beyond the call of duty to help us get things done. I believe this is a hallmark of healthy Christian service, and I believe this is a part of the heritage we seek to pass on by model through shared experience with the coming generations.

Thank you for the marvelous privilege of serving as president this year. I assure you it has been a labor of love. I look forward to our gathering in New Orleans next Summer under Tom Bolton’s leadership. I trust we will gather with many new faces who will reflect a new generation.

With Humbled Gratitude,

Paul
